Cuts to Winter Fuel Payments

Hundreds of thousands of UK Pensioners can beat government cuts in energy bill support

Around 11 million pensioners will no longer be eligible for Winter Fuel Payments in England, Wales, and Scotland.

At the end of July the government announced Winter Fuel Payments, aimed to help with energy bills, will be means-tested moving forward. This means starting this Autumn, pensioners can only claim these payments if they are on Pension Credit.

Before the announcement, the £100 to £300 government handout was available to those aged 66 and above to help with rising energy prices.

Hundreds of thousands of us are missing out on energy support that is rightfully ours. A whopping 888,000 thousands are eligible for Pension Credit but aren’t claiming it. Not only are they missing out on Winter Fuel Payments, but an additional £3,900 a year!

In its 2023 Cost of Living Survey, Quids in! found that 75% of social renters were turning off the heating even when they were cold. This number could be even higher as headed into winter, Pensioners will have even less support as the cost-of-living payments and the Household Support Fund no longer available.

Age UK warns that pensioners will have around £600 less to spend on energy bills. The extra benefits that Pension Credit unlocks could make a big difference this winter.

Don’t miss out! Use the Benefits Calculator and find out how to claim Pension Credit on GOV.UK or call the Pension Credit claim line on 0800 99 1234 (lines open Monday to Friday, 8am-6pm).

Claim what you’re entitled to and keep your home warm this winter.
