Discover free and affordable devices across the UK with schemes, programmes and savvy strategies
These days, having a device isn’t a luxury—it’s a must. Whether it’s for job applications, schoolwork, or staying in touch with loved ones, being connected can make a world of difference.
There are plenty of schemes and programmes out there to help people on a tight budget get the tech we need. And here’s how:
1. National Schemes That Help
There are brilliant schemes across the UK that provide affordable or free devices:#
- National Device Bank by Good Things Foundation: This programme redistributes donated devices to people who need them most. It’s designed to ensure everyone has access to essential technology. Learn more at Good Things Foundation – National Device Bank or find local digital inclusion support.
- Get Online @ Home: Offers refurbished desktops and laptops from as little as £99. Perfect if you’re on benefits like Universal Credit. www.getonlineathome.org
- Digital Poverty Alliance: They team up with local groups to provide free devices to people in need. Visit their website to check out their support network. www.digitalpovertyalliance.org
- Reconnect by Vodafone: This programme partners with charities to provide free devices and internet to those in need. Find out more at www.vodafone.co.uk.
2. Grants to Help Get Connected
If you’ve got kids or a disability, you might be eligible for grants that cover devices:
- Family Fund: This charity helps families raising disabled children with grants for tablets, laptops, and more. Apply at www.familyfund.org.uk.
- Turn2us Grants Search: This handy tool helps you find local grants that might cover the cost of tech. Visit www.turn2us.org.uk.
- Local Council Assistance: Many councils provide emergency funds or digital access programmes. Check with your local council to see if they have any schemes in place.
Your local council might also offer emergency funds for tech—give them a call to ask.
3. Buy Refurbished and Save Big
If you can’t get a free device, don’t forget that refurbished ones are much cheaper than brand-new tech—and just as good.
- Community Reuse Projects: Schemes like Tech TakeBack refurbish old devices and pass them on to families in need. Visit www.techtakeback.com/buy_online.html.
- Cex: Buy refurbished laptops, tablets, and phones with warranties at bargain prices.
- Amazon Renewed: Refurbished items that come with quality guarantees and big savings.
4. Cheap Internet Deals
Getting a free or cheap device is just one part of the puzzle. To stay connected, we’ll need affordable internet too.
- Social Tariffs: Many broadband providers, including BT, Virgin Media, and Sky, offer low-cost broadband plans for people on Universal Credit or similar benefits. These plans often start from £10–£20 per month. We can find out more by reading the Quids in! Guide to social tariffs.
- National Databank by Good Things Foundation: This programme provides free mobile data to individuals in need, in partnership with Vodafone, O2, and Three. Visit: www.goodthingsfoundation.org/our-services/national-databank
With these schemes and programmes, we can get the device we need and stay connected to what matters most.
