Benefit claimants could slash broadband bills in half with social tariffs, but many remain unaware
It’s a tough choice many of us face: keep the internet, or pay other essential bills?
Prioritising rent, food, or energy is understandable. But staying connected matters too. The internet isn’t a luxury anymore. It’s how we manage our finances, apply for jobs, access services, and stay informed.
So we shouldn’t have to give it up.
Big savings
Social tariffs offer discounted broadband deals for those of us claiming Universal Credit or other benefits. Deals start at around £12 a month and are not subject to mid-contract price hikes.
We could save around £200 a year. But many of us don’t know about them. Uswitch found that two-thirds of low–income households were unaware of social broadband tariffs.
Social tariffs are available through different broadband suppliers. Each supplier has their own eligibility criteria. Find out more here.
Next steps
We should first check with our existing provider if they offer social tariffs. If our provider doesn’t allow us to leave our current contract before it’s up, we will have to wait out our contract.
But Uswitch offers a reminder for those of us still part-way through our current contracts. If we scroll to the bottom, we just fill out our details and they’ll send a handy reminder when our deal is up.
