Bank blocks stop the gamble

Gambling blocks in bank apps help us take control and stop unwanted spending

Gambling can spiral fast. One tap, one bet, one more spin, and suddenly we’re down more than we can afford. But now, many banks across the UK are offering a clever little feature to help us hit pause: gambling blocks.

How It Works

These blocks are built into our bank apps and are completely free to use. Once switched on, they stop card payments going through to betting sites, online casinos, arcades, and even some lotteries. It’s instant, discreet, and doesn’t require explaining anything to anyone.

Which Banks Offer It?

Most major banks — including Barclays, Monzo, Halifax, NatWest, Starling, Lloyds and HSBC — now offer these tools. In many cases, we can activate them in seconds through our banking app. Some banks even add a “cooling off” delay, so we can’t just switch it back off on a whim.

They work by recognising a type of payment code linked to gambling merchants. If we try to spend at a site that matches, the payment gets blocked automatically. It’s a simple but powerful step that gives us time to think.

What We Need to Know

Of course, gambling blocks aren’t a silver bullet. Charities like GamCare offer help 24/7 for anyone struggling to stay in control.

Many people who’ve used gambling blocks say they give a real sense of relief. It’s one less worry when payday rolls around, one less temptation when boredom or stress creeps in.

And if we’re worried about how this might look on our bank record, don’t be. Gambling blocks don’t affect our credit score, and no one needs to know we’ve turned one on.

For anyone trying to cut back or stop altogether, using a gambling block can be a quiet but solid first step.
