Fuel payment U-turn for pensioners

9 million pensioners to get heating cash after cuts scrapped

The government originally planned to slash Winter Fuel Payments, limiting them only to pensioners on Pension Credit. This would have left millions without the vital cash boost to help with soaring energy bills. But after massive public outrage and political pressure, they did a full U-turn.

Now, 9 million pensioners across the UK will get Winter Fuel Payments this winter. Anyone in a household earning under £35,000 receiving the money. For those earning above that threshold, the payment still arrives but will be clawed back through their taxes later.

What’s New This Year?

  • Pensioners will get £200 per household, or £300 if someone is aged 80 or over.
  • The payment is means-tested, but broadly available to most pensioners to avoid leaving anyone out in the cold.
  • No need to apply! Payments are automatic in November or December 2025.

Scotland and Wales: Extra Cash Boosts

England’s expansion means more funding for Scotland and Wales.

  • Scotland is topping up the UK payment with its own Pension Age Winter Heating Payment: £203.40 if under 80, or £305.10 if 80 or over, adding extra warmth to Scottish homes this winter.
  • Wales is matching the UK Government’s payment, making sure Welsh pensioners get the same level of support.

When Will Payments Be Made?

Most of us will see the money land in our bank accounts automatically in November or December 2025. Keep an eye out for a letter with the details, and if it’s not arrived by 28 January 2026, we should contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.
