Lots of us still need help to get online

Two friends help each other understand the internet

The latest government figures suggest that 1.6 million people are still living ‘offline’, but help is at hand…

As well as the 1.6 million people who don’t have access to the internet, a further 7.9 million adults lack basic digital skills. In today’s society we all know that to do even the most basic things such as shopping, using our bank account or applying for benefits can require us to be online, and know what we are doing.

There is help out there. The government has just announced a new £9.5 million pound project that local charities and organisations across the UK can access to help provide training.

Quids in! has already teamed up with Learn My Way, a website of free online courses for beginners, that helps people develop online skills such as video calling and accessing benefits. Their courses can be accessed here and offer a wide range of skills to help you make video calls, keep up-to-date with news and family, use a bank account and apply for jobs.

Learn My Way is a website of free online learning for beginners, helping us develop digital skills to make the most of the online world. It is safe to use, and the training is free.

LearnMyWay splits up the online world into easily digestible chunks such as “Safety and Security”, Managing Yopur Health, “Staying In Touch” and “Online Entertainment”. In each section there are quick and easy exercises that will have you using your new skills in no time. Check out their help page for more on how it works.
