Paying too much for TV packages?

Tv packages

Prices for some TV and broadband deals are rising this spring. A quick check of our package could uncover easy savings.

TV packages have quietly become one of those household costs that creep up over time. A broadband bundle here. A sports add-on there. A couple of streaming subscriptions on top. Before long, entertainment can cost far more than we realise.

With some providers increasing prices this spring, now could be a good moment to review what we are actually paying for.

What counts as a TV package?

A TV package usually combines broadband, live TV channels and optional extras such as sports or movie subscriptions.

Providers like Sky, Virgin Media and BT often bundle these services together into one monthly contract.

According to Which?, the key is choosing a package that fits what we actually watch rather than paying for channels we rarely use.

We can read their guide to choosing the right package here.

Check whether our price is changing

Some providers are increasing prices this spring. For example, some Sky broadband and TV customers will see bills rise from April.

When providers increase prices during a contract, they usually have to give customers notice. That can sometimes allow us to cancel or switch without paying exit fees.

MoneySavingExpert explains how this works here.

Compare deals before renewing

If a contract is ending or prices are increasing, it can be worth checking what other providers offer. Different companies bundle channels, broadband speeds and streaming services in different ways.

Comparing deals can help us see whether we are paying more than necessary. Comparison guides and reviews can be found here:

One cost that is rising

The TV licence is also increasing slightly from 1 April.

A colour licence will rise from £174.50 to £180 a year, while a black-and-white licence will increase from £58.50 to £60.50.

The licence fee is linked to inflation, which means it usually rises a little each year.

Taking a few minutes to review our TV setup could uncover easy savings without giving up the shows we enjoy.
