10 Top Tips to Cut Your Bills

1, 2 & 3 INSULATE, INSULATE, INSULATE
Yes it sounds daft but good insulation is the single most effective thing you can do to bring down your heating bill. By a mile. 1: Make yourself draught excluders – put a snake by every door. 2: Insulate your windows, buy thicker curtains and look at using draught excluding tape. 3: Find out if you qualify for free thermal loft or wall insulation by ringing 0300 123 1234 (England, Wales, Northern Ireland) or 0808 808 2282 (Scotland) or take a look at Energy Saving Trust’s website.

4 SAVE ENERGY IN THE KITCHEN
Only boil the amount of water you need in a kettle. Always put a lid on a saucepan. Make sure your saucepan is on the right size ring – if the ring’s too big you’re wasting energy.

5 SAVE ON YOUR WASHING
Always try to wash a full load. Wash your clothes on a lower heat. Drying clothes on your radiators adds to energy consumed by your boiler.

6 UNPLUG AND SWITCH OFF
Mobile phone chargers, TVs on standby, computers. They all waste energy.

7 SAVE ON YOUR HEATING
Keep your radiators clear so they can work properly. Use reflective radiator panels fixed behind them. Use your timer to set your heating so it’s only on when you’re in the house and awake.

8 KEEP YOUR COOL
Never put hot food in the fridge – always let it cool down naturally. Use the thermostat in your fridge to keep it at 3 to 5 degrees Celsius.

9 GET HELP
Talk to your supplier if you get into difficulty, many have schemes and grants available to help you. Ask about the Warm Homes Discount Scheme that can offer a discount on your electricity if you’re unemployed, on a low income or have children under 5 living with you.
