Breakfast crazes come along every year promising new health benefits for a hefty price. But one of the oldest breakfasts happens to be one of the cheapest and healthiest – porridge!
Easy to make and endlessly adaptable to your own taste, this provides a perfect start to your day (especially during the winter) and at about £1 for a 1kg of oats, you’ll get around 20 servings keeping you Quids in!
- 50g rolled oats
- 200-300ml water (or 200ml water + 100ml milk)
- Pinch salt
- In a small pan add all your ingredients and place over a medium heat
- Bring to the boil and simmer until the porridge reaches your preferred consistancy
You can serve your porridge simply as it is or add your favourite topping. Jam or honey are popular choices as are nuts or fruit such as bananas. Blueberries and raspberries work very well but as these are more expensive it’s worth checking prices before you buy.
