Only a fraction of those on Universal Credit are getting cheaper broadband
If we’re on Universal Credit we can get special broadband tariffs that could save us £250 a year.
But lots of people don’t really know about the tariffs – research by consumer group Which? found the takeup could be as low as one in 100 eligible households.
And Which? also criticised providers for not doing more to let those of us on Universal Credit know these cheaper broadband tariffs are available.
As well as costing as little as £15 a month, social tariffs don’t usually come in for price rises or exit fees.
Eight UK providers offer them, and Which? is urging other companies to follow suit. They are usually open to people on Universal Credit and other means-tested benefits.
The companies offering social tariffs are BT, Now, Sky, Virgin Media, Hyperoptic, G Network, KCOM and CountryConnect. TalkTalk and Vodafone don’t currently offer one.
And Clean Slate, home to Quids in!, has been involved in a scheme called Nobody In The Dark. This can help us get the digital skills to make the most of the internet. The support and learning is free, so if we’d like to improve our digital skills we should check it out.
Winners of the recent Nobody In The Dark/Future-Proof Finance Quiz prize draw are:
- Rebecca from Warminster (£100 voucher)
- Roy from Peterborough (£100 voucher)
- Anne from Bristol (£50, which Anne asked to be donated to a local foodbank)
