Some fares are being cut by half to encourage passengers to get back on trains
If we need to travel by rail soon we can get cheap train tickets in April and May.
It’s being called the ‘Great British Rail Sale’ and means some off-peak fares are being cut by up to half.
As a country we’ve been travelling less by train since Covid struck. Passenger numbers are only at 62 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.
To get us back on the railways, the government has said more than a million tickets will be reduced.
It comes as rising petrol prices might be keeping us at home because we just can’t afford to travel.
But before this offer, train travel had also gone up in price by 3.8 per cent in March.
The cheap train tickets are on sale now and the offer applies to travel until 27 May.
An off-peak journey from London to Edinburgh could drop from £44 to £22, for example.
It’s important to remember that if we’re on benefits, there are other ways to save on travel.
If we’re on Universal Credit, Jobseekers Allowance or some other beneits we can speak to our work coach about a Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Card.
This will entitle us to 50 per cent off some train tickets.
We can check out train times and fares at Trainline or National Rail Enquiries.
