Broadening horizons: How to find cheaper broadband

Food and energy costs remain high – but it’s still possible to find cheaper broadband

Around 7 million UK households are believed to be overpaying for broadband packages.

As other bills rise, looking for cheaper broadband deals and packages can help us loosen up tight budgets.

Should I stay or should I go now?

Before jumping ship, it’s helpful to compare broadband options and deals.

Around 4 million people on Universal Credit, Pension Credit or other benefits are missing out on social broadband tariffs. Latest government figures show these tariffs could save us £202 a year. They may be offered by our existing provider.

Another option is some good old-fashioned haggling. While it might feel out of our comfort zone, negotiating is expected by providers.

The broadband market is competitive and we can use this to our advantage by offering providers a loyal customer base. But we need to come prepared.  Make sure to detail the maximum we’re willing to spend based on our budgeting plans and provide examples of offers from other providers.

But if haggling doesn’t work, we shouldn’t worry. Providers often have cheaper broadband packages for new customers. According to Which?, switching can lead to potential savings of around £200 annually.  To see what packages save us most, we can use MoneySavingExpert broadband comparison tool

Don’t forget…

Whether we choose to stay with our existing provider, it is important to note when our contract is due to end.

Most broadband providers have rolling contracts where after the first discounted year, the contract automatically renews to a standard, more expensive package.

We should notify the provider well in advance that we wish to end our contract to avoid automatic renewals or late cancellation fees.
